Ambush Bug - Part IV -
Mating Pair
(two photos)
Family - Reduviidae (Assassin Bugs)
Genus Phymata (Jagged Ambush Bug)

The male Ambush Bug is darker and smaller than the female.
You can see the piercing mouthpart on both of
these
bugs and they were keeping their eyes on me just in case they needed to
defend themselves.

This year has been a great one for all kinds of Assassin
Bugs.
I have been finding Ambush Bugs and Zelus
Assassin
Bugs on Antelope Island all over the place. Last year I
could hardly find
any anywere because their
food wasn't as plentiful. This year there are plenty of insects
for
them to eat. Even the swallows are
plentiful on the island, which hasn't been the case for a few
years. © Carol Davis, 8-16-2009
