apple maggot fly
This only time I have seen one of these and it was quite exciting. At first I thought it was a small spider

Rhagoletis pomonella
Gardeners are not excited to see these as since they feed on the flesh of fruit. Bugguide reports
they initially fed on wild Hawthorn but have slowly moved to apples and cherries over the last 100 years.
The University of Florida has an
extensive article about these beautifully-patterned flies.  © Carol Davis 9-4-2012
