Bee Fly
Genus Systoechus
possible Systoechus candidulus

Systoechus bee fly
I was instantly intrigued by the contrast in color on this bee fly. At first I
attributed it to the sun only being on one half of the insect, but then I realized
the sun was shining on ALL of it.  Beautiful little insect and beneficial.

According to the Canadian Journal of Arthropod Identification, Systoechus
larvae consume grasshopper eggs (there should be a lot of these in the Utah west
desert, if that's the case).  © Carol Davis 7-5-2017, Big Cottonwood Canyon, UT
