Citronella Ant
Lasius latipes

Candice Pulli found this (deceased) bright orange ant in Millcreek, Salt Lake County, Utah, and wondered
what species it was. Neither one of us had seen one quite so bright before. © Carol Davis 9-12-1016

Bugguide identified it as Lasius latipes. The queens are known to take over the colonies of
other ants and they get the name Citronella Ant from the smell they emanate if they are
threatened or if they are crushed. Antwiki has some extensive information on this
native ant (just keep scrolling down their long page.) © Carol Davis 9-12-2016
