Western Greenhead Horse Fly
Genus Tabanus

biting horse fly
During the summer you can find these biting flies all over Utah and they are fast and horrible. This one was at Bear
River MBR
just waiting for me to get out of the car - I think it was also admiring itself in the side mirror.  I must admit
they have beautiful green eyes, which I love to look at (right before I take aim at them). © Carol Davis 7

large greenhead horse fly
I can't find anything on the internet about this specific species of  "greenheads" in Utah. They probably don't
live long enough to be identified because they are slapped to smithereens by their victims. Purdue University
in Indiana has a great article on horse and deer flies.  © Carol Davis 8-16-2015, Bear River MBR
