Ichneumon Wasp Cocoon
Subfamily Campopleginae
Possible genus Hyposoter

Campopleginae cocoon
My friend, Ruth Sulik, found this cocoon on some flower stems
in the North Arm Area of Pineview Reservoir when we were hiking
through the woods.  We initially thought it must be a moth cocoon.
Below is a side view.  Carol Davis, 6-16-2012

It turns out that his is actually a cocoon of an Ichneumon Wasp
that has parasitized its host. Bugguide has a rather complicated
explanation for these on this page.  You will also be able to see
 some of the
Campopleginae wasps on Bugguide by clicking on
What an incredible wasp.  Carol Davis, 6-16-2012
