Long-horned Beetle
Crossidius hirtipes wickhami

longhorned beetle
Looks like its wearing a shiny black collar, doesn't it.  Nature spared no expense
with this handsome fuzzy beetle. Carol Davis 9-14-2008

orange and black beetle
Crossidius hirtipes in the wild fields of Strawberry Reservoir.  What a wonderful insect haven
in the  Summer.  Lots of beetles have orange, yellow or  red coloring to help them blend in with
the flowers of the desert.  Larvae of long-horned beetles are plant borers.  I'm not sure what
the adults eat since I could find no literature on this particular species. They don't bite,
although they sometimes look a little scary.   Carol Davis, 9-14-2008
