Root Maggot Fly
Anthomyia procellaris

Anthomyia procellaris
Female Root Maggot Fly with a very full yellowish belly. I think it might have either eaten
a lot or is ready to give birth.  These flies are believed to be associated with birds nests,
possibly feeding on droppings.  © Carol Davis 8-18-2014

Only the female of this species has the 5 black spots on the thorax, according to Bugguide.net
"The blackish areas [on the males] are divided by pale lines along the dorsocentral bristles." This
fly was hopping around on a bench in Red Butte Garden,
SLC, Utah.  © Carol Davis 8-18-2014
