sawfly galls
These Sawfly galls are quite prevalent at certain times of the year in the
Jordanelle Dam wetlands, Wasatch County, Utah. The Sawflies, who
are responsible for the formation of these galls on willows, are
primitive wasps - usually small and black. © Carol Davis 8-4-2010

they do not have a lasting detrimental effect on the willows,
according to
this article by the University of California.
