Seed-eating Ground
Beetle
Genus Amara - "Sun Beetles"
As the name implies, the Amara species are seed-eaters
but they may also be predatory. This one
was digging around at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Kane
County, Utah © Carol Davis 5-25-2011
The transparent hind wing that is sticking out at the
rear of the beetle is protected most of the time by the
elytra,
the hardened fore wings. Ms. or Mr. Amara was thinking of
flying off but had a change of mind at the last minute
and accidentally slammed his or her "finger" in the
door. © Carol Davis 5-25-2011
