Shield-backed Bug  (two photos)
"Jewel Bugs"
Family Scutelleridae
Genus Homaemus

I get excited when I find any insect that  I've never seen before, and this was one of those. It was hanging
around in the Jordanelle Dam wetlands.  Many immature (and some adults) in this family can be
just beautiful and earns them the nickname "Jewel Bugs".  Here's one of my favorite examples

Homaemus
Shield-backed Bugs look like their cousins the Stink Bugs and are in the same Family, Scutelleridae.
They are vegetarians and are not really welcome anywhere but they do provide food for
birds and other non-vegetarians.  © Carol Davis 9-30-2012
