Soldier
Beetle (two photos)
Chauliognathus fasciatus

Soldier Beetle in the desert near St. George, Utah. This
beetle is omnivorous, with the larvae feeding on insects such as
aphids, and
the adult existing mostly on nectar. Thus, it is a
beneficial insect and its color serves as a warning to leave it
alone. It has a
toxic compound in its system to deter predators and insect
collectors. © Carol Davis,
