Stiletto Fly

stiletto fly at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes
I knew I had to take this fly's picture as it was sunning on the sidewalk at the Coral Pink
Sand Dunes in Kane County, Utah, because it was very unique-looking.  According to
NCBI, Nebritus stiletto flies have unusually long antennae. © Carol D

stiletto fly
From what I understand, these flies feed on nectar and pollen but as larvae feed on pupae and larvae
of other insects, so they are considered beneficial.  I walked right up to this little thing and it let me
take pictures - it was probably too warm and cozy to move. © Carol Davis 5-27-2011
