Syrphid Fly
Genus Platycheirus

platycheirus syrphid fly
This little fly was near a boardwalk but just far enough into the marsh in the Jordanelle
Dam wetlands that I was unable to get my camera very close without falling in.  I'm amazed
I even saw it because Bugguide says they tend to stay hidden back in the reeds.  Luckily it
stayed for awhile and let me take some photos. © Carol Davis

wetlands syrphid fly
I understand that the larvae of this species feed on aphids and the adults just take nectar.
I knew immediately this was something different - it had an orange racing stripe
down the side. © Carol Davis 5-20-2012
