Syrphid Fly
Eristalis stipator

Eristalis stipator
I was trying to figure out what this Syrphid Fly was on Rocky Mountain Bee Plant and, since I had only one photo,
it was
difficult. It looked like so many others I had seen before. But then I noticed it had black spots on the wings
and a light yellow open band on the first (or second) segment of the abdomen.  I searched carefully through
Bugguide under the Eristalis genus of syrphid flies and finally found this one, Eristalis stipator. One of the
experts
confirmed my guess.  Nature Search has a nice page about this fly.  © Carol Davis 8-10-2013, Ant. Island
