Carpenterworm Moth
(two photos)
Prionoxystus robiniae
2 " long

This Carpenterworm Moth (a first for me) was hanging out by my
porch light on Independence Day. What a firecracker!
Bugguide.net say the females can have a wingspan of over 3
inches. The wood-boring Carpenterworm Moth larvae are very
destructive to living trees, damaging otherwise healthy wood for lumber
and causing your favorite yard trees to bite the
dust earlier than planned. © Carol Davis, 7-4-2009
