Platycryptus
californicus and
the Fly (two photos)
Jumping Spider

According to Bugguide.net, these are not Platycryptus undatus
but Platycryptus californicus.

This Platycryptus californicus, the most sociable spider species
around my house, was on this piece of rain gutter under my deck.
What I love about jumping spiders is that
they're not afraid to tackle anything. You know how hard
it is to kill a fly with a fly swatter
but somehow the jumping spiders
just sneak up on their prey and take them by
surprise. I love it! Still people would rather have
flies
around their house than a harmless and interesting jumping
spider. Go figure. © Carol Davis, 7-2-2008
