Male Western Black Widow Spider
with Beetle Prey   (two photos)
Latrodectus hesperus

male black widow spider
I saw this small beetle (about the size of a
Dermestes frischi) in some weeds by the side of the road
Antelope Island and immediately wondered what tiny spider would be attached to it since it looked
immobile.  I thought there might be an accompanying crab spider and I was delighted to find
this male
Black Widow chowing down.  I shot this photo from about 4-5 feet away
with the telephoto setting on my Panasonic camera. © Carol Davis 9-1-2016
