Jumping Spider  (three photos)
Phidippus johnsoni

johnson jumping spider
While walking through Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City, I spotted something I thought was a bee
because it was just sitting in the middle of some beautiful yellow common yarrow. Talk about subtle!
He was waiting for an insect to fly in - and eventually one did.  This photo was my favorite because
of the beautiful background of purple and blue flowers. Carol Davis 6-20-2013

phidippus johnsoni
A lot of the red color on the abdomen has rubbed off but it had enough to tell he was a Phidippus
johnsoni and he wasn't shy. I think he might have been young, even though he was a pretty good size,
because he wasn't afraid and, although I took his picture numerous times, he didn't care. This photo was
taken just before my battery died.  Carol Davis 6-20-2013

spider and the bee
I left to go sit down and change the battery on my camera and when I came back, to my surprise, the spider was still
there and he had this little bee or wasp in his grasp.  Phidippus johnsoni are some of the hardest
spiders for me to
photograph because they are so skittish. Thanks to this bold guy, I succeeded today. Carol Davis 6-20-2013
