Fledgling Spotted
Towhee
Pipilo maculatus

I was in Red Butte
Gardens taking pictures when I heard a few Spotted Towhees in the
bushes. In a few moments,
out popped this bird that reminded me of a Song Sparrow but there was
something wrong with this picture,
this fledgling was much larger than that. It then hit me it had
to be a fledgling Spotted Towhee.

It spent a minute or two just picking things off the
walkway and then scooted back into the bushes with the
other towhees. That's the first fledgling of this species
I've ever seen. It wasn't the least bit shy. I was
wondering if it could have flown with those pathetic little wings--you
can still see little pin feathers sticking
out all over it. Anyway, it was a cute little thing. I had
to do a fill flash on this photo to make the side of the
bird show up better and that's why the legs are such a bright
orange. © Carol Davis, 9-16-2007
